Blog #7 - Big Red No

One major illusion, we humans made to think is true that is really not, is the color of Mars. People always believe how the "Red Planet" is really red. However, scientist had proven that the color is caused by the iron oxide dust, rust, which majority of the planet is covered in. The iron oxide is the same thing that gives blood and rust their color.
"Oxide appears red because it absorbs the blue and green wavelengths of the light spectrum while reflecting the red wavelengths" (Space).

"Iron oxide dust has been found to be most abundant; the layer of iron oxide dust there only goes to a depth of about 2 meters. That’s pretty shallow compared to the radius of the entire planet" (Universe).

This shows that only the surface area of the planet is red and that the planet is clearly not fully red. The red dust that covers Mars may be formed by ongoing grinding of surface rocks. Many people believe and still believe that the planet is fully red, because of its appearance to the naked eye, even on top of the planet itself.

In the play of “Oedipus the King” Oedipus had the free will in choosing his own destiny. Even though the oracle has told him the prophecy that he would kill his own father and later marry his mother, it was his fault that the prophecy has been fulfilled. Oedipus listened to the oracle and flees from his town to avoid killing the person who he thought was his father. He had rushed into an old man and he wasn’t even sure if the person he fled from was his real father. So he killed the old man not knowing he had killed the king of the town he is now entering and also killing his father. He was not certain of whom his father truly was but he goes out and kills someone that is old enough to be his father. “With all these indications of the truth here in my grasp, I cannot end this now.”I passed close by a spot where three roads meet, and in that place I met a herald and a horse-drawn carriage. Inside there was a man like you described. The guide there tried to force me off the road and the old man, too, got personally involved. In my rage, I lashed out at the driver who was shoving me aside. The old man seeing me walking past him in the carriage, kept his eye on me, and with this double whip struck me on my head, right here on top. Well, I retaliated in good measure I hit him a quick blow with the staff I held and knocked him from the his carriage to the road. He lay there on his back. Then I killed them all " (970). He claims that he had killed him in this part due to his amount of rage. It was avoidable but he killed someone who was able to be his father. Later finding out that it is his father he had also found out that he had married his mother which has caused him to fulfill the prophecy that both Oedipus and Jocasta thought had been avoided.

Thesis: Gattaca is the closest humanity will ever get to become a Utopia.

The world will never be able to become a Utopia because the society will not be the same. This means that several people would be successful while others will attempt to be successful.  However, the closest where the society will ever become to a Utopia is at Gattaca. Society has terminated all types of diseases; there are now environmentally friendly vehicles which provide cleaner transportation. There are more advanced sciences which led life in Gattaca into becoming a Utopia.
Science has eliminated all diseases making life safer which lead to no deaths by any forms of diseases. Because of this, there were no more losses of family members or friends due to sickness. Birth is the only way people will have disabilities or any lack of abilities. But this can be avoided by using genetic engineering; which is also used to advance the human's skills which allows them to live a healthier life. Living in a world where diseases have killed a large amount of people but later on finding a cure, is a sign of improvement in science.
Gattaca have made an environmental friendly way of transportation; which lead to the elimination of burning fossil fuel for transportation. The safer atmosphere stopped the depletion of the Earth’s ozone layer which leads to less UV rays which is deadly to the body. Due to the depletion of the Earth’s ozone layer, Global Warming has occurred; causing higher temperatures and the melting of Antarctica’s ice.
The goal of science is to make the world a better place to live, where we could understand the world better and find solutions to make life safer. The science in Gattaca has allowed people to visit outer space frequently in order to have a better understanding of not only about our planet but the planets around us. Marie Curie once said “Nothing in life is to be feared.  It is only to be understood.” This means that we need to understand something in order for us not to fear it. The advancement of sciences has eradicated the fear of the unknown and has made us discover more information about it. In addition, this provides more motivation on why we shouldn't fear the unknown but give us an understanding on why we used to fear it.
“Most of us want our children to have better lives than we have had, not simply to duplicate ours, even genetically. That is why genetic engineering experiments that promise “better” children (and better humans) are much more important to the future of humankind” (Science Fiction 233). Genetic engineering is the future and it will improve the future of further generations as time progress. Genetic engineering is the key to make civilization a Utopia. Humans look at the meaning of Utopia as an improvement of living conditions which further the living conditions of everyone’s everyday life; Gattaca had betrayed this.
Humanity will never be equal in where there would always be one group higher than the other. The reality is there would never be a Utopia; however, Gattaca is the closest humanity will ever get to become a Utopia. The more advancement in science and technology, the more steps we take towards a better life. A Utopia is an ideal place, and the views of an ideal place are a place where there are no diseases, advancement in science and safer living conditions. The fewer problems in humanity are a big improvement from the present that makes Gattaca a Utopia for now. As sciences and technology improves so does the views of a Utopia; however, the views of a Utopia currently have been the same views for centuries which matches the life style in Gattaca.

Thesis: Gattaca is the closest humanity will ever get to become a utopia.
The world will never be able to be a utopia because everyone won't be able to be the same which means some people would overachieve while others just try to achieve.  However, Gattaca is the closest that society will ever be to a utopia. The society has terminated all types of diseases. There are now environmentally friendly vehicles which provide cleaner transportation. There are more advanced sciences which basically led life in Gattaca to become a utopia. Majority of the citizens in Gattaca is living in the perfect life which means it is a utopia.
There are no deaths by any type of diseases because science has eliminated all diseases making life safer. There are no losses of family members or friends due to sickness. Birth is the only way people have disabilities or lack of abilities but it can be avoided using genetic engineering; which is also used to advance the human's skills and make them have a healthier life. Marie Curie once said “Nothing in life is to be feared.  It is only to be understood.” Meaning that we need to understand something for it to not cause us any fear of it. The advancement of sciences have eradicated the fear of the unknown and made us discover more about it. It later gives reasons why we shouldn’t have fear in it but let’s us understand why we used to fear it.
Humanity will never be equal in where there would always be one group higher than the other. The reality is there would never be a utopia; however, Gattaca is the closest humanity will get to a utopia. Question:  Should I expand more on the idea of Gattaca being a utopia because they eliminated diseases or stop and talk about the other reasons why it is a utopia?

As stated on Dictionary.com, a “utopia” is any real or imaginary society, place, state, etc., considered to be perfect or ideal. The ideal place has no one that’s more successful than anyone else. There are no diseases; and if there is there would be a cure for it. It’s a place where everyone gets along no matter what similarities they have. The ideal place is perfect but, it’s only imagination because nothing can be perfect in every way.
Also on Dictionary.com, it states that a “dystopia” is a society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease, and overcrowding. Another imaginary place where it displays the Murphy Law which is “If anything can go wrong, it willIt’s a place where everything goes wrong. It would be a place where there is overpopulation but yet a lot of people would be dying from diseases and lack of food.
Both are unrealistic but would be the way people think how the world will be if everything in the world goes right or wrong. The world is balance in where none is possible to ever happen. People have made examples of an utopia and dystopia in movies and television shows. In each of the shows or movies that have one; there is always a perfect civilization until something happens whether it happens in or out of the city that causes it to no longer be a utopia or dystopia. Which shows that if there is such a thing as one; it would not last for long because of the outsiders or because of a minor glitch in the system.
