Thesis: Gattaca is the closest
humanity will ever get to become a utopia.
The world will never be able to be
a utopia because everyone won't be able to be the same which means some people
would overachieve while others just try to achieve. However, Gattaca is
the closest that society will ever be to a utopia. The society has terminated
all types of diseases. There are now environmentally friendly vehicles which
provide cleaner transportation. There are more advanced sciences which
basically led life in Gattaca to become a utopia. Majority of the citizens in
Gattaca is living in the perfect life which means it is a utopia.
There are no deaths by any type of
diseases because science has eliminated all diseases making life safer. There
are no losses of family members or friends due to sickness. Birth is the only
way people have disabilities or lack of abilities but it can be avoided using
genetic engineering; which is also used to advance the human's skills and make
them have a healthier life. Being in a world where diseases have killed a big
amount of people but later finding a cure to it, is a sign of the improvement
in science.
Gattaca
have made an environmental friendly way of transportation; which lead to the
elimination of burning of fossil fuel for transportation. The safer atmosphere
stopped the depletion of the Earth’s ozone layer which leads to less UV rays
which is deadly to the body.
The goal of science is to make the
place a better place to live. In where we understand the world better and find
solutions to make life safer. The science in Gattaca has made the people able
to visit the outer space frequently to better understand not only about our
planet but the planets around us. Marie Curie once said “Nothing in life is to
be feared. It is only to be understood.”
Meaning that we need to understand something for it to not cause us any fear of
it. The advancement of sciences have eradicated the fear of the unknown and
made us discover more about it. It later gives reasons why we shouldn’t have
fear in it but let’s us understand why we used to fear it.
Humanity will never be equal in
where there would always be one group higher than the other. The reality is
there would never be a utopia; however, Gattaca is the closest humanity will
get to a utopia. The more advancement in science and technology the more steps
we take towards a better life. A utopia is an ideal place, and the views of an
ideal place are a place where there are no diseases, advancement in science and
safer living conditions. The fewer problems in humanity is a big improvement
from the present that makes Gattaca a utopia for now. As sciences and
technology improves so does the views of an utopia; however, the views of a
utopia currently have been the same views for centuries which matches the life
style in Gattaca.
Question: Should I expand
more on the idea of Gattaca being a utopia because they eliminated diseases or
stop and talk about the other reasons why it is a utopia?
I think you should spend more time on why is a utopia because you already mention one of the positive aspects of Gattaca, but that’s not the full picture. Remember a utopia is a perfect place, show more evidences that support your thesis other than just the elimination of diseases.
