Thesis: Gattaca is
the closest humanity will ever get to become a Utopia.
The world will never be able to become a Utopia because the
society will not be the same. This means that several people would be
successful while others will attempt to be successful. However, the
closest where the society will ever become to a Utopia is at Gattaca. Society
has terminated all types of diseases; there are now environmentally friendly
vehicles which provide cleaner transportation. There are more advanced sciences
which led life in Gattaca into becoming a Utopia.
Science has eliminated all diseases making life safer which
lead to no deaths by any forms of diseases. Because of this, there were no more
losses of family members or friends due to sickness. Birth is the only way
people will have disabilities or any lack of abilities. But this can be avoided
by using genetic engineering; which is also used to advance the human's skills which
allows them live a healthier life. Living in a world where diseases have killed
a large amount of people but later on finding a cure, is a sign of improvement
in science.
Gattaca have made an environmental
friendly way of transportation; which lead to the elimination of burning fossil
fuel for transportation. The safer atmosphere stopped the depletion of the
Earth’s ozone layer which leads to less UV rays which is deadly to the body.
Due to the depletion of the Earth’s ozone layer, Global Warming has occurred;
causing higher temperatures and the melting of Antarctica’s ice.
The goal of science is to make the world a better place to
live, where we could understand the world better and find solutions to make life
safer. The science in Gattaca has allowed people to visit outer space
frequently in order to have a better understanding of not only about our planet
but the planets around us. Marie Curie once said “Nothing in life is to be
feared. It is only to be
understood.” This means that we need to understand something in order for us not
to fear it. The advancement of sciences has eradicated the fear of the unknown
and has made us discover more information about it. In addition, this provides
more motivation on why we shouldn't fear the unknown but give us an understanding
on why we used to fear it.
“Most
of us want our children to have better lives than we have had, not simply to
duplicate ours, even genetically. That is why genetic engineering experiments
that promise “better” children (and better humans) are much more important to
the future of humankind” (Science Fiction 233). Genetic engineering is the
future and it will improve the future of further generations as time progress. Genetic
engineering is the key to make civilization a Utopia. Humans look at the
meaning of Utopia as an improvement of living conditions which further the
living conditions of everyone’s everyday life; Gattaca had betrayed this.
Humanity will never be equal in where there would always be one
group higher than the other. The reality is there would never be a Utopia;
however, Gattaca is the closest humanity will ever get to become a Utopia. The
more advancement in science and technology, the more steps we take towards a
better life. A Utopia is an ideal place, and the views of an ideal place are a
place where there are no diseases, advancement in science and safer living
conditions. The fewer problems in humanity are a big improvement from the
present that makes Gattaca a Utopia for now. As sciences and technology
improves so does the views of a Utopia; however, the views of a Utopia
currently have been the same views for centuries which matches the life style
in Gattaca.
